15 Long Years

On March 20, 1999 I married the girl of my dreams, but that was 15 long years ago.

We’ve been through ups and downs. Financial windfalls and shortfalls. Ministry triumphs and devastations. Confusion and clarity. We’ve irritated the fire out of each other at times. We are passionate people (i.e., stubborn) which makes for some interesting seasons as neither wants to back down.

We’ve been through infertility struggles and adoption court cases. We’ve taken care of lots of foster babies as well as tried to love and support congregations and teams of people. We’ve felt the stress of moving across the country twice and traveled to faraway places. I could go on…

See what I mean? 15 long years.

And after 15 years, I can safely say she is not the girl of my dreams anymore. Now wait, hold on there. I say that because we were barely 20 when we got married and I thought I knew her and what married life, ministry, and family would be. It was all a dream, but if you want to fulfill a dream, you have to wake up.

Every step I’ve been privileged to take with Andrea has been an awakening. She has become stronger, wiser, more beautiful, and more dear to me with every passing year. The good and the hard times have shown me the godly woman and mother she is. We love each other more and we love Jesus more than we ever have before, and thankfully we see how blessed we are to do all we do together.

To Andrea for our anniversary and always–thank you for being the girl of my dreams, but thank you even more for doing the hard work to make our love and marriage strong as we stay focused on our God and His heart for us and our family.

Even when I’ve bucked against it at times, you have given me wise counsel full of grace and the Holy Spirit. And I am humbled at the way you have submitted to my leadership in our family. It makes me love you all the more and want to be the man of God I know you see. Your heart to give and serve have been an inspiration to me. Your life speaks of divine love, and I am grateful for you every single day.

It’s been a beautiful 15 years and I can’t wait to see what all the future holds for us together. It’s only getting brighter…

anniversaryTo celebrate this milestone, we are taking a trip next week–just the two of us. Then on the way back we get to minister with some friends in Florida. It’s been quite a while since we’ve got to do anything like this so to say we’re excited is an understatement! The trip has been a couple of years in the planning, but we are ready for the reconnecting and relaxation time.

Happy anniversary to my amazing wife, Andrea!
