Another Wall, Same God

a wall is
a funny thing
it’s mocking,
though silent
though motionless
angry, but cold
bringing emotion
to the surface
you didn’t know
was there
bringing fears
to the forefront
you thought surely
you had conquered
bringing tears
that burn and sting,
but demand to be released
the wall hears no pleas,
grants no reprieves,
imparts no favor,
nor honors perseverance
so why train focus
on the obstacle in front?
the wall is for overcoming
the wall is for scaling,
demolishing and defeating
for the proving of breakthrough,
for the glory of God
no great wall
ever trembled
by a hopeless wall-gazer
victory comes when
what is beyond motivates
and compels you through

Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see— how good God is. Blessed are you who run to him. –Psalm 34:8

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. –Hebrews 12:1-2

What wall are you coming through?

A Warrior Poet Circle post

  1. Great inspiration. We all have walls and walls contain prisoners, but walls can’t hold the One who holds the earth in the palm of His hand. Too often I think we build the walls and sit idly by and let the walls be built around us. Pondering my walls…

    • I definitely know what you mean. Sometimes we run into them, sometimes we build them--we don’t get over, around, or through them until we surrender to Him. Thanks Floyd.

  2. I’m coming through a wall of a lack of focus. Thankfully.

    • Amen. Focus on the right things is a precious thing. Thanks Matt.

  3. ‘the wall is for overcoming’

    Yes! It! Is!

And He has already overcome the greatest wall of all -- our condemnation and death. How much simpler is it for Him to guide us into overcoming these walls we face now?

    • YES! So true. Everything else, every other obstacle is so far below what He’s already accomplished. We should be the most confident people on the planet! Thanks Dusty.

  4. What motivates me is that I know what’s on the other side of that wall, God’s blessings and victory in Jesus. I can keep climbing those walls because I know that God is with me.

    Thanks for the encouragement!

  5. I loved your poem. Then I was thinking -- -- If you can’t climb over your wall, then look closely as there is a door and you can go right on through.

    • Yes! He is the Door and the Way! Thank you, Hazel.

  6. Jason, don’t write poetry but sure appreciate a good one that leaves me thinking profound thoughts and this one did. I often think we make the wall the enemy which he loves when he is given voice. It’s life down here on earth…one hill after another, one valley after another, one wall after another and praise God one Calvary’s hill that has been won and gives us strength to walk this sinful earth. Great post.
