Create in Me

I feel myself slipping
Retreating from the day
Layer after layer
Confers a motionless silence
Colors run together
Thoughts of beauty fade
As heavy reality
Stifles the song
Breaking the flow

Mourning frivolity
An artist gone mad
The results speak louder
Than I’d like to admit
Without one plea
And just as I am
I remember a psalm
I tether to a cry
Create in me a clean heart

Suddenly strokes of light
Dance across
The canvas previously marred
By wayward flailing
He makes sense
Of the running colors,
Fills the soul
With healing grace
Order breaks the chaos

“Create in me”
In hope, I cry again
My canvas is ready
For the vision of life
The greater Artist
Paints across my heart
Not in noble ideas
But living experiences
Divinity overtaking humanity

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation
And sustain me with a willing spirit. –Psalm 51:10-12

  1. Beautiful!

Great poem to go with such a wonderful Psalm! The older I get the more I appreciate the Psalms.

    • I’ve actually always loved the Psalms. I read them through about once a month throughout most of high school. Maybe Psalms and teenage angst go well together- ha! Thank you, TC.

  2. Just incredible! Glad I got to hang out with you some last week!

    • We had a great time. Hope you did too. :) Thanks Philip.

  3. No matter the colors, He orchestrates them to perfection. At times they may not make sense to us, but in His time, they are all wonderfully placed.

    • Not always easy in the process--can be very frustrated for our limited capacity to understand--but He is forever faithful! Thanks so much, Dusty.

  4. Awesome poem and prayer! When we see the world without considering our Father we get lost and confused… Seeking Him first is the only way to see our world and His sovereign hand. Thanks for the lift this morning. Well done, Sir!

    • I just thought about we think we’re the artist, but really we’re always the canvas. Someone or something is painting on us a picture. It may be sin and pleasure, living for family and duty, but in any way, we don’t control our destiny. When we turn our hearts over to Him, He directs us into understanding and the depths of His freedom and love. What a trade! Thanks Floyd.
