Don’t Tolerate the Squatters

If you had a person show up at your door, push his way in, and immediately set out to make himself at home, eat your food, steal your cash, and be a nuisance…

If someone came in and did all that, how long before you would get upset and do something about it?

No matter how ‘nice’ a person you are or how afraid of confrontation you might be, your righteous indignation would probably kick in fairly quickly.

“How dare you!” you might say. “What makes you think you can come in here, abuse me and my stuff and just get away with it?”

This is not my house (as evidenced by lack of stains on the rug). 🙂

Why do we get these things in the natural and completely ignore them when things come in to steal our freedom, joy, and life in Christ?

Paul asked the same of the Galatian church,

You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed  as  crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? –Galatians 3:1-3 NASB

I think he’s talking to me.

We allow too many things to crowd out the word, too many lies of religion to convince us we are bound and always will be.

We have to aggressively guard our hearts and minds from intruders just as we would our front door. Take every thought captive. Remember your testimony. Experience His love and grace daily.

We have to know His word and voice like we know our family so that we let in the right ones and evict the others as the squatters they are. They have no right to stay with you, advise you, steal from you, or anything else.

Simple message today, but I hope you talk to Holy Spirit now. Do you have some squatters that need evicting today? What are your thoughts on this?

This is a repost from 2012

  1. Yup, the biggest squatter in my life is the enemy himself. He comes to the door of my thoughts and feelings with a suitcase full of negativity. And all too often, I invite him in for a cup of coffee and a good meal. Sometimes I let him stay for days.

It’s time for me to get stronger and smarter!!

No opening the door to smarmy peace-stealers. The Lord lives with me, and it is HIS message that matters.

    • This is where I am as well, Sharon. It’s so easy to sit back and let these things in even when they have no right to be there or influence us. Fixing our eyes and thoughts on Him and His word is the only remedy after we kick them out. Thanks Sharon!

  2. I’ve been telling the people the Holy Spirit is an invited guest. When you invite a guest you basically tell them “mi casa es su casa.” All others are encroachers.

    • And those encroachers do indeed make themselves at home if we let them in. Ready to clean some house! Thanks Bill.

  3. I used to have a lot of very obtrusive squatters in my thought life. I’m thankful to say that there aren’t as many today. At least, they aren’t as obvious. I’m sure they’re there. Gets hard to spot them sometimes since we sure seem to get used to them, don’t we?

    • Very good point. We need the Holy Spirit and others who are close to expose what may be hiding. It’s a process for sure. Thanks so much, Kari.

  4. I like what Bill said about the Holy Spirit being our only invited guest in our lives. Your post today really made me think about which visitors try to steal my joy. I will be on the look out!
    Blessings, Jason!

    • Amen! Thanks Martha. I’m on the lookout too. 🙂
