Evicting the Squatters

If you had a person show up at your door, push his way in, and immediately set out to make himself at home, eat your food, steal your cash, and be a nuisance…

If someone came in and did all that, how long before you would get upset and do something about it?

No matter how ‘nice’ a person you are or how afraid of confrontation you might be, your righteous indignation would probably kick in fairly quickly.

“How dare you!” you might say. “What makes you think you can come in here, abuse me and my stuff and just get away with it?”

This is not my house (as evidenced by lack of stains on the rug). :)

Why do we get these things in the natural and completely ignore them when things come in to steal our freedom, joy, and life in Christ?

Paul asked the same of the Galatian church,

You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed ¬†as ¬†crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? –Galatians 3:1-3 NASB

I think he’s talking to me.

We allow too many things to crowd out the word, too many lies of religion to convince us we are bound and always will be.

We have to aggressively guard our hearts and minds from intruders just as we would our front door. Take every thought captive. Remember your testimony. Experience His love and grace daily.

We have to know His word and voice like we know our family so that we let in the right ones and evict the others as the squatters they are. They have no right to stay with you, advise you, steal from you, or anything else.

Simple message today, but I hope you talk to the Holy Spirit now. Do you have some squatters that need evicting today? What are your thoughts on this?

  1. Man, just go ahead and kick me in the pants this morning. Definitely on par with what I’ve been thinking lately. Don’t listen to what the liars are saying, look at all the knowledge and truth you have access to and put them in their place… Out the door. Thanks Jason!

    • My pants have been kicked first so I don’t feel so bad about it! :) This idea of real and experiential freedom in Jesus is just consuming me at this moment. Gotta have it manifested in my life and want to see it in everyone around me! Thanks Philip.

  2. We are on the same page today Jason.

There’s some squatters that I need to throw out. They sneaked in and roosted. They have been derailing my follow and my joy… and it’s all because I let them.

    No more.

    • I am definitely with you, Dusty. Once they’re uncovered I just feel like “how did I let this go on so long?” His grace is sufficient and He turns our weakness into a revelation of His strength. Thank you so much.

  3. I actually read that same passage (Chapter 3) during my Encounter Time this morning. I focused on another passage but yours is pertinent. Sometimes I allow self-condemnation to take up too much space in my head. Kicking it out is good advice. Thanks Jason.

    • Man, I hate that one. It can sound so spiritual sometimes when it whispers in our ears and takes up space in our hearts. As I’m fond of telling our church family, that’s not good enough. Thank you, Bill.

  4. Those are some powerful words by Paul… He’s talking to me too. The constant evicting of the squatters is a life long process I’m afraid, but they gotta go. Good one.

    • Those lies and schemes keep coming, but we have hope because He’s cleansed us and He overcame. When the devil tempted Him and found nothing in Him, he left. We get to submit ourselves to God, resist the devil and he must flee. So thankful for grace! Thank you, Floyd.

  5. Yeah, I got two and their names are Worry and Mis-Trust.
