Grace and Discipline Can Be Friends

one-wayYou know there are legalists who champion rules, regulations, and empty religion. Put yourself in submission. Fight sin with all you’ve got or you’re not a real Christian.

There are also those who subscribe to the idea that grace means you sit back, relax, and do nothing. The rules are for those who don’t understand grace, and if you engage in any discipline at all you’re not a real Christian.

Of course, you could forgo the extremes and find out how discipline and grace coexist to bring us closer to the heart of God and mature us into the people God intended us to be.

This is the impetus behind Jerry Bridges’ book, The Discipline of Grace: God’s Role and Our Role in the Pursuit of Holiness. I’ve read some of one of Jerry Bridges’ other books and it’s insightful and prescient.

As believers, we are called to understand the power of grace and how that pushes us to conform to Jesus’ image and heart. This is what this book is all about.

That’s why I am so excited to announce that this book is the next in our round of book club discussions. Previously we had an amazing time discussing the classic, The Hiding Place, and my co-facilitator, Sarah Salter, and I feel this is going to be another great edition to our now years of diving into all sorts of great materials.

Would you join us?

We are announcing the book this week and we’ll start discussing chapter 1 next week. If you have a blog and care to join us on Wednesday (or any time in that week), you can add your link to the linkup either here or at Sarah’s place.

All you need to do is take a quote, passage, or idea from the book that inspires you and write about it. I can say from experience that I have learned so much and been blessed by engaging with the other bloggers who have joined in as well as those who have commented and joined the conversation.

It’s been a while since our last discussions ended so we’re ready to get into this!

What do you think–will you join us for these discussions? Have you ever seen a competition between grace and discipline?
