I Should Give Up

treeI’ve failed, faltered, and fallen short
I’ve given in to tiredness, discouragement,
The lies that sounded so true
Because broken ears heard them
And downcast eyes stayed earthbound
Challenges abound, enemies taunt
Affliction tears at memories of intimacy,
Of being close to the Name
It seems so clear: I should give up
Feels like an awakening inside
I should walk away and try to forget
But it’s the one thing I can’t do
I make a step toward the door
No fire blocks my way, no angel grabs me
I just can’t go–the promise is alive
Love is real whether I feel it or not
No, I will wait; there is more than I see
Yes, I will wait and stand another day
The name of the Lord is to be praised

Though the fig tree should not blossomAnd there be no fruit on the vines,
Though the yield of the olive should fail
And the fields produce no food,
Though the flock should be cut off from the fold
And there be no cattle in the stalls,
Yet I will exult in the Lord,
I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.
The Lord God is my strength,
And He has made my feet like hinds’ feet,
And makes me walk on my high places… –Habakkuk 3:17-19

  4. Interesting that I read this in the midst of helping my son with his poetry project for school. Kind of gave me a unique thought process based on how he’s had to analyze different poetic forms. And I like that you include the scripture after, so that I could easily connect what you wrote with it. I’ve not really tried poetry since I had to in school years ago, but I am enjoying reading yours.

    • Awesome. Thanks Kari! I couldn’t tell you what form it is (free verse maybe?), but I like putting my thoughts in a different format. Helps me process better. Thanks again.
