Thankful, in Progress

waitingIt’s been an interesting week for sure. I was hoping for a fully formed and ready testimony this week, but short of lying to you, I can’t do that.

See, we hit a little snag with the financing of our house. We have attempted to give them all the documentation they require and still we sit in limbo. Did I mention we’re supposed to close next week and move out of current house?

Amazingly though, my stress hasn’t been if it will happen but just the waiting for how it will all come together. Deadlines loom and we can’t do anything but pray and wait.

And of course, this makes me think of fleas.

Why? You may ask. Because for our online book club we’ve been reading the Hiding Place, by Corrie ten Boom, and as she and her sister sat in a Nazi death camp, her sister encouraged her to give thanks in all things (1 Thessalonians 5:18), even thanking God for the fleas.

Corrie was maybe rightfully skeptical. Fleas? How on earth can anyone be grateful for fleas?

Well, as it turned out, that flea infestation kept the guards away so that they had much more freedom to conduct their Bible studies and meetings with fellow prisoners (for a full picture, go read my friend, Glynn Young’s great post about it).

I realize too often I’m ready to curse my negative circumstances instead of thanking God. So Wednesday, as I waited and waited some more for any good news, I stopped and thanked God for my fleas. Not literal fleas, mind you; but annoying nonetheless.

“Father, I thank You for the delay and hangup in this financing. I thank You that You’re causing us to grow in this and You will get even more glory from the outcome.”

I still don’t see the fruit of it, but I trust I will. However this all plays out, God will be glorified and we’ll have an opportunity to be closer to Him.

Yet I am so thankful to God, who always marches us to victory under the banner of the Anointed One; and through us He spreads the beautiful fragrance of His knowledge to every corner of the earth. –2 Corinthians 2:14 (VOICE)

Sometimes the march to victory goes through the valley of questions and wondering. His word is gold. It’s sure and perfect. If He says He’s marching you to victory, be thankful for your fleas. Be thankful for your delays, and press into the One who’s making you a beautiful fragrance.

So I was wrong, I said before all we could do is wait and pray. We do those things, but we also choose thanksgiving. We’re moving. We’re learning. We’re growing.

In progress means we’re making progress, and I don’t have to settle for anxiety and worry when He graces me to find thankfulness.

How about you? Are there any fleas you can be thankful for? What’s your testimony this week?

  1. The Hiding Place is such a great book. The fleas section reminds me of our flea infestation when I was pregnant with our first. We lived in a townhouse that they came over from our neighbors. I woke up every morning with dozens of bites on my legs. Thought I would lose my mind. 🙂 I think I needed more practice in finding the blessings in difficulties! By grace I’ve had practice and I’ve learned. Praying everything comes together soon and that your move goes great!

    • Oh man, when those things are upon you (like they were literally in your story!), it can be so hard to think of anything else. Like you said though, there’s grace if we choose it. Thanks so much, Deb! And thank you for adding your link. 🙂

  2. I’ve had many “fleas” in my life as of late and have tried to be thankful even in times of trial. A gratitude attitude is a wondrous, transforming blessing in our lives when we hone it and hang on to it.
    Blessings, Jason!

    • Oh Martha, I’m learning! Sometimes it feels like a long-time coming, but He’s so gracious with us. Thank you and blessings to you too. Thanks so much for adding your link as well!

  3. I’m thankful for the delays my kids are currently seeing in their lives. They are working hard but meeting frustration. But I know God is using these delays to grow their character. He is doing things in their lives that I could never do, especially since they are teenage boys and at a point where they want to be independent in their decision-making. I’m thankful that I am taking a back seat, so I am out of the way for God to do a work in them. Honestly, it’s frustrating and discouraging for me at times, but I know victory is coming, and it’ll be one far better than I could imagine or ask.

    • Amen. I believe with you for your kids and my kids as well. I get concerned many times with statements I hear them make or friends who influence them, but God is working. We give input where we can and trust God that He loves them so much more than we can. Thanks so much, Kari.

  4. That sounds like a great book! I wish I thought to thank God for the “fleas’ but all too often I beg for God to take my trials away. The next time I feel the need to complain, I’m going to remember your post! God bless!

    • It is a wonderful book, Valerie! I highly recommend it. Thank you so much. 🙂
