Letting Go Too Soon

Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her;
those who hold her fast will be blessed. –Proverbs 3:16-18

Remember those contests where people would keep their hands on a prize (like a car) until only one person was left? Some of these lasted for days, I believe, but if you could stick it out, you could be the big winner.

I believe in God’s goodness and that He intends to bless. Now, that doesn’t just mean “blessing” in the way we like or want, but if we can be faithful with little, He can make us into a ruler of much. The wisdom of God leads us to those blessings, but while “all her paths are peace,” we’re not alone on the road.

Just like that contest, you’ve got your hand grasping godly wisdom firmly because you know if you persevere, you will be blessed. Who doesn’t want to live blessed by God? The challenge comes when someone or something gets right up in your face…

 And screams that you’re worthless and completely useless.

Or punches you in the gut with a betrayal.

Or through careless decisions, ruins your financial or social standing.

The list is long, but the goal is the same: give up on trying to live in godliness and joy. The whispers grow louder in calling that you compromise and forget God’s purposes and vision for you, your family, your business, or whatever else He has given you to do.

The persuasiveness seems tangible in light of the circumstances, but you can’t be fooled by it. Your eye must remain on the prize of knowing Jesus. Keep your hand on it, even as the storms blow and dreams seem to get farther away and more impossible instead of getting closer. You can trust Him. You can trust His wisdom. If we don’t neglect it, it grows inside us in thought and deed.

Meditate on His grace and goodness–don’t let go so soon. What’s too soon? Anything before experiencing the fullness of what He’s promised you. Fulfillment is yours to lose.

What are your thoughts about these verses?

Another in a series of monthly posts where I go through Proverbs a verse or two at a time and share the whispers of the Holy Spirit to my heart (click here for more verse by verse posts).

  1. Great post today and timely for me. I had lots of stuff screaming in my face the last few days. Rude, smelly problems that want me to take my hand off of the prize; but as intentional as they were in seeing me let go, I set myself to be even more intentional in hanging on. Thanks for the encouragement today. 🙂

    • Amen! Hold on until the promise is fulfilled. Thank you, Philip.

  2. Meditate and hold on! His goodness will carry us through into a life unlike any other.

    • It’s an adventure to know and follow Him, isn’t it? Thanks Dusty!

  3. These promises are the fulfillment of a person who has wisdom from God. And the beginning of that wisdom is, “Fear of the Lord.” An awesome and reverent grasping of the sovereignty and grace of our Father is the first step toward His riches in spirit.

    If the world and even the church would seek His wisdom first this would be a much different place than it is now…

    Love those verses.

    • You got it. If we want real change and transformation, we need to rely on and trust His wisdom and counsel. It’s not always easy, but it’s the only way to receive His blessings because it prepares us to handle those blessings. He’s a good God! Thanks Floyd.

  4. You are asking me to be patient. Don’t you know how hard that is? 🙂

    • I do! That’s why it’s a fruit of the Spirit. Otherwise, I’d be sunk. 🙂 Thanks Bill.
