Light Friday Hit List: 8/27/10

August 27, 2010 3:52 am discussion, Encouragement, Light Friday Hit List

Rounding up posts from around the web that challenged, inspired, encouraged, made me laugh, or all of the above. Be sure to check out these favorites and tell them I sent you!

  • Missionary by Dusty Rayburn (Reflections on the Life of a Christian). I truly believe this and if we could understand it more fully, we would be radically changed and so would the world!
  • Blessings That Grow In The Dark by Bonnie Gray ([in]courage). This is such a beautiful reminder that even in darkness, we aren’t dead and there are blessings that are coming out of it.
  • My Visit with a Prostitute by Mike Ellis (Mike in Progress). This post is so moving, full of sadness and hope, and making the difference by simply offering an ear and the truth.
  • The anonymous person used as the sermon illustration by Jon Acuff (SCL). Oh, we’ve all heard these and as for me, I’ve used plenty of them myself. Love the hilariously anonymous post.
  • Teaching self esteem versus self respect by Kathy Richards (Katdish.net). Part of the blog carnival hosted by Bridget Chumbley, this is an excellent exhortation (fancy word for “kick in the pants”) to not be so preoccupied with making our kids feel special when we can help them live up to their uniqueness.
  • 7 Pitfalls of Being an Introverted Pastor by Ron Edmondson (RonEdmondson.com). This post could have been written by me as I see myself in every point! This makes me appreciate those who give me grace and understanding all the more. Also makes me trust God all the more!
  • The Strategy of Unbelieving by Ryan Tate (Doorframes of Taterhouse). “A lot people aren’t willing to embrace that they have a problem unless they also believe that there’s a solution.” That’s how the post starts and it gets even better from there!

I don’t know if anyone has ever wondered, but the list is not in any hierarchy of least to most favorite or vice versa. I simply follow the order of how I read then saved them for the week. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

More secrets revealed: the random picture of the week I post here is normally found by my typing “funny” plus another word into Google and looking at images. Aren’t you glad you know that?

This week the “another word” was bowling (don’t know why!) and I found a picture that explains why Martha Stewart has never been asked to go bowling again (from Cybersalt.org).

Have an amazing weekend and pray for Breakthrough Church if you think about us. We’re having some special meetings with a powerful and passionate man of God named Danny Fisher, who has been a friend of this church for a very long time. I’m expecting a wonderful impartation and that God will transform the life of everyone who shows up. Thanks for your prayers!

Besides my normal questions of “do you have a favorite to share?” and “care to discuss any of mine?” I’d also like to ask about the last time you went bowling: fun, disaster, last week, ages ago? I haven’t been in a while, but I enjoy it (as long as I’m not losing too bad). Let me hear you!

good list. The only one I have not read yet is Bonnie Gray’s.

    2. Not sure about the first one, but the rest are excellent! :-P

Thank you for the include. I appreciate you brother!

Last bowling trip was 5 years ago…total disaster. My brother and I are extremely competitive..instead of fun it became a contest…and I was a sore loser. :-/

Dusty, you hit on something close to my heart with that post so thank you! I hear you on the competitive/sore loser thing. Making a mental note not to take you guys bowling while you’re here in Juneau. :)

    3. Awesome to hear from so many honest hearts. Thanks for the list.

Thanks (again) for the mention. I have been super busy this week, and have not had a chance to read some of my faves, so thanks for this great list!

I assume I am one of the favorites you’ve missed since your lovely thoughts have been absent around these parts. Don’t worry- you didn’t have to say it, I already knew. :)

        Thanks Kat--I appreciate you!

Bowling? Okay, let me just explain this (in case I haven’t already covered this ground with you.) I am not at all coordinated. (Although I AM graceful. Don’t ask me to explain that contradition. Just trust that it’s true.) And I am more than a little bit of a klutz. Me & a heavy ball? That’s just BEGGING for a trip to the ER. (My foot healed nicely, thank you.) And I think my high score is about a 65. Stop laughing, Jason. I can hear you. (Okay, not really. But stop laughing at me anyway.)

Bowling: the last time I bowled, it was with a nerf ball and used water bottles. I was showing the little ones in summer school during play time. No, I never actually bowled in a bowling alley, ever.

Oh, it’s fun Helen! You need to try it at least once. Your nerf version sounds fun though. :)
