Thoughtfully Funny

My wife, Andrea, and I are out of town today attending a foster parent training. It’ll be a long one! But I thought I would keep it short and do something a little different today so I’m going to share a joke to make you chuckle and a quote to make you think.laugh

Here’s something funny:

In the backwoods of Arkansas, Mr. Stewart’s wife went into labor in the middle of the night. The doctor was called in to assist in the delivery.

To keep the nervous father-to-be busy, the doctor handed him a lantern and said, “Here, you hold this high so I can see what I’m doing.” Soon, a baby boy was brought into the world.

“Don’t be in a rush to put the lantern down. I think there’s yet another wee one to come.” Sure enough, within minutes he had delivered another baby.

“Now don’t be in a great hurry to be putting down that lantern, young man. It seems there’s yet another!” cried the doctor.

The new father scratched his head in bewilderment and asked the doctor. “Do ya think it’s the light that’s attractin’ them?”

And here’s something to make you think:

The dilemma of the human race is not that we are unaware of God but that when push comes to shove, we value ourselves more highly than we value God. The core of humanity’s sin problem is not a horizontal behavior to be corrected but a Vertical relationship to be restored.  –James MacDonald, Vertical Church

Your turn! Share something funny or thought-provoking with me. Or what do you think of the joke? What’s your thought on that quote?

  1. That’s a powerful quote! I really like it. I haven’t read that book or anything from that author before but you’ve got me intrigued.
Have a great and productive day at the training class.

As for anything funny to share I can’t think of anything at the moment and as for thought provoking I’ve been thinking a great deal the 17 year old girl in Connecticut who the courts (and DHS) are forcing to undergo chemo against her will because she’s “under age”.
I find it ironic and sad that a 17 year old isn’t mature enough to make a life regarding decision such as this but many think that someone even younger than 17 is mature enough to decide to take the morning after pill or in some cases even seek abortion. I just don’t understand the worlds view of the sanctity of life. How’s that for thought provoking? Probably not what you were expecting.

    • Oh man, you hit the nail on the head. It’s crazy the standards that are applied to one area are off-limits in another. Crazy value system. Thanks TC.

  2. Funny story and profound quote. Foster parents…my husband and I wish we had taken in foster children when we were younger. It’s one of several things you give up when your life is serving in a third world country. I admire anyone who takes these children in.

    • It’s a calling for sure. I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone, but if God moves someone’s heart to do it, it’s a beautiful thing (as well as heartbreaking). Thanks so much, Betty.

  3. Love the quote and the story is cute too! Rev and I were foster parents for several years before we adopted our youngest. I know you and Andrea will be a great blessing in the lives of children who share your home. Enjoy a wonderful weekend.
