Top 5 Cartoon Criers

It’s been a while since I did a not-so-serious post here so I feel like it’s overdue. When you couple that with the fact that I’m away from home until Monday to attend a conference in Oklahoma, simple gets a whole lot more appealing.

I was reading this post on an entertainment news site (don’t judge me too harshly) all about the cheesy animated moments that make you cry.

I have to admit that I have a soft spot in my heart for these animated tearjerkers. I can be a fairly emotional guy when I get into a story so all those cartoon movies that I say my kids dragged me to? Most of them I wanted to see anyway, and I find myself misty-eyed before it’s over way too often.

Since this is supposed to be simple, I’m just going to spit them out and we can discuss in the comments (these are in no particular order).

  1. Horton Hears a Who –it’s when that little shirker Jojo lets out the life-saving yell that tips the scale, I just can’t take it!
  2. The Iron Giant –if you’ve never seen this, it’s excellent (the director went on to do the Incredibles) and the big ol’ robot saves the day.
  3. Monsters, Inc. –Boo and Sully, reunited… Awwww…
  4. Toy Story 3 –this one, I didn’t just mist up. I actually had tears running down my cheeks. Thank God there were extended credits so I could dry off before exiting the theater.
  5. Dumbo –the “Baby Mine” song with his mom (although it didn’t do anything for me before I was a parent)

Okay, I have bared my soul and invited your ridicule!

What’s the last cartoon that made you cry or tear up? Do you love animated movies like I do? Oh and guys, don’t be afraid to let it out. This is a safe place. 🙂

  1. I don’t have kids, but I like kids’ movies. I hope there’s nothing wrong with that. If it’s wrong, I don’t wanna be right. The animated ones do choke me up… But the movie that made me bawl the most? The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Oh. My. Gosh. I don’t just cry… I UGLY cry… That whole sucking-air, heaving-sobs, type of crying.

    • 🙂 thanks for making all us guys feel like men again! Ha! That’s awesome, Sarah. I understand completely. That’s such a powerful picture of the kingdom. Love it.

  2. hmm. late to the party. i cried during an American Tale, although I don’t really remember much of the movie. As far as recent cartoons, I realyl don’t remember! Not sure i have…

  3. Probably doesn’t really count, but I cried at E.T. even the third time I saw it.

As for Up, my daughter the pianist ordered the musical score. As soon as the ebony and ivory keys begin that song, I’m waterworks all over again.

And I’ll cry at just about any other movie, including Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, when the dad puts on the monkey collar at the end.

I made the mistake of walking into the living room during Toy Story 3 last night, when I was trying to get some work done in the other room. I don’t know when I’ve laughed and cried and been on the edge of my seat like that—and not taken advantage of occupied family to get some writing done.
